Gizachew Taddesse AKALU obtained his MSc in Clinical Laboratory Sciences, with Speciality in Diagnostics and Public Health Microbiology (2013), Addis Ababa University, College of Health Sciences, School of Medical Laboratory Sciences, Addis Ababa; BSc in Medical Laboratory Technology (2009), Addis Ababa University, College of Health Sciences, School of Clinical Laboratory Sciences, Addis Ababa, and Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology (1996), Jimma University, Jimma, Ethiopia. Presently he is designated as Executive Director of Ethiopian Medical Laboratory Association (EMLA)
He is actively involved in scientific activities nationally and internationally, and his positions and honors include: Member of the Higher Advisory Council of the National Diagnostics and Imaging-MoH-office of the Minister, Member of the National Laboratory Advisory Technical Working Group (NL-TWG)-Ethiopian Public Health Institute-EPHI, National representative of the International Federation of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine-IFCC-LM and Executive Board member of African Federation of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine, Member of the African Harmonization Technical Working Party for In-Vitro Diagnostics and Medical devices through the national regulatory authority-FMHACA–AU-NEPAD, Member for the national renal transplant initiative task force-NRTITF-MoH, St Paul Hospital Millennium Medical College, and Board Member of BD Africa Scientific Advisory Board, BECTON, DICKINSON B.V Diagnostics Company. Professionally, he is a Life Member of Ethiopian Medical Laboratory Association-EMLA and Ethiopian Public Health Association-EPHA. He is also a Global Outreach Member of American Society for Microbiology-ASM, Regular Member of African Society of Laboratory Medicine-ASLM and Associate Member of The Global Health Network-Professional Membership Scheme.
His tenure in laboratory medicine spans for almost 18 years reflecting strong and innovative leadership skills coupled with hands-on experiences in Clinical Chemistry-Biochemistry, Immuno-chemistry, Hematology, Immunohaematology, Medical Microbiology, and Diagnostics and Public Health Microbiology. He has been instrumental in introducing in-vitro diagnostics and medical devices regulatory harmonization frame work in Ethiopia, and championing in most of the African countries by serving as a TWG member for Pan African Harmonization Working Party (PAHWP). He takes pride in the significant milestones and growth achieved by EMLA under his leadership over the past Four years. Gizachew Taddesse AKALU is the author-co-author of 5 scientific papers and has made 10 conference presentations. He being an academic enthusiast has contributed immensely to knowledge dissipation in teaching, invited as external examiner of graduate student research in AAU; and by organizing more than 10 CPD courses, and greater than 250 in-service training sessions and workshops nationally and very recently with international partnerships. He successfully organized 5 conferences for EMLA from 2013 – 2017. He serves as a reviewer for 2 international peer reviewed journals and an initiator and editorial manager of the Ethiopian journal of Laboratory Medicine-EJLM, which is an official scholarly journal of EMLA. His research interest includes infectious diseases, diagnostics and medical microbiology. Since 2013 he has been PI and co-PI in grants worth more than ETB 30 million.
