Logically the dynamism and challenges of Africa`s healthcare sector are reflected in the contintent`s hospitals and hospital projects. Whereas concerns and challenges are multiple, the sector is definitely experiencing renewed opportunities, reforms and successful innovations, resulting in an increased appeal towards the private sector and levels of private equity going into projects expected to grow.
Governments are indeed more and more opening up to active private involvement in hospital projects, PPPs are reaping successes, not only in the pure field of construction/acquisition, also when linked to quality, management, UHC or staffing. With growing middle class percentages driving needs, Ministries of Health in West and Central Africa from for instance Ivory Coast, Benin, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Senegal, Cameroon are continuing their previous plans and announcing new healthcare reform/investment plans for the years to come.
The Ministry of Health and Social Action Senegal is – within the country`s PSE Plan – budgeting 20m USD in 2020 in technical upgrades at the country`s hospitals. The same PSE framework has planned the new University Hospital in Diamniado Lake City.
Cameroon is putting through a thorough digitalization reform and Ivory Coast is planning 20 new hospitals. Hospital projects, whether greenfield or rehabilitation, and how to build `expansion` in operations, technology, quality, management and PPPs will be the focus themes of the 8th Africa Hospital Expansion Summit hosted on 16 and 17 September in Dakar Senegal. At the event executives from Ministries of Health, Faith-based Health Providers, NGO`s, Private Investors, Hospitals, Healthcare Groups, Medical Faculties, Hospital Associations, Banks, Investment Agencies and Regulatory Bodies will go into discussion with Technology Suppliers, Medical Device Vendors and Distributors, Turnkey Providers, Integrators, EPCs, Consultants and Architects to further explore partnerships and market development.
